high and mighty

Helmut Newton for Vogue US 1995, images via the fashion spot

A little bit of editorial content for you today, thanks to the documentary I watched last night about the Editors of Vogue. Definitely worth a pop if you get a chance.

Onto the editorial itself; shot by Helmut Newton and featuring a lot of scary looking heels metal instruments, it sets out to highlight the potential dangers of heels.* A little severe and a little more controversial than that, it's pretty hard hitting and definitely an editorial after my own heart. I don't wear heels, and this editorial firmly cements my faith in the flat. Luckily for me, I've no long-standing injuries other than two weak ankles due to twists and sprains.

What this article makes apparent, however, is not that we need to take good care of our ankles and walk carefully, but that you can't underestimate Vogue for making an editorial about so much more than the shoes.

*Well, I suppose only sky scraper heels, as I'm pretty sure a kitten heel is relatively harmless. Then again I fall over in flat shoes so I'm not really one to talk.

white - the encore

Vogue Italia, April 2010

When I get an idea of what I want to wear in my head - in this specific case, the colour white* - I more often than not make a collage of items (see previous post), and then visualise what it would look like in an editorial/if I were Anna Dello Russo.

So, there's the short but sweet logic behind today's post: a blast from the past editorial courtesy of Vogue Italia circa 2010. Isn't it SO good? I have to admit while searching for this I came over far more editorials of the Sports-Luxe variety, and to find this in a sea of stream-lined white minimalism was a dream come true for a fashion fantasist such as myself. When it comes to editorials I like a little bang for my buck if you know what I mean?

*Yes I'm aware that white may or may not techinically be a colour.

style crush: Solange

Long story short: I'm back from France and with me I've brought a stack of French magazines (including my much loved Jalouse) and a new style crush. Enter Solange...

I have to admit, whilst the fashion world has been in love with her for a while, I remained unconvinced. I've always loved her ever-so-slightly-famous sister Beyoncé (more for her music and stage presence than her outfits...), and never thought much of Solange, in terms of dressing or talent or otherwise.

I'll eat my words now. My love for her has kind of crept up on me, but this editorial completely sealed the deal, so-to-speak. Her print mixing is amazing, and a complete inspiration to the new approach I'm trying to take towards dressing (more colour and prints, less black). She has Beyoncé's beauty, but with an edginess and quiet confidence that I would love to emulate. So, Solange, je t'aime!

Brittania

Elle Brazil (April 2012) x Georgia Jagger

Despite seeming a little too similar to a certain editorial featuring Miss Moss, I kinda fell in love with this when I found it randomly on the internet due to the poofy skirts, gold glitter boots  and costume-like nature of the styling. If I could wear a crown on my head everyday, I would.

Also somewhat in love with the dark purple lip colour. Beaut.

It also feels very fitting with the Queen's jubilee being this year and everything - I guess this is about as patriotic as I get!

underwater

I actually had a completely different 'Under The Sea' themed post planned (complete with a witty title and numerous references to 'The Little Mermaid'), but I found these pictures while doing research for that post I found this editorial and thought the pictures were too beautiful not to share.

Editorial: Vogue Nippon 2010 // Scans via TFS

These pictures definitely make me want to get my Ariel on by donning mermaid-esque clothing and frolicking in the sea. When I was younger I actually believed I could swim in a way that made me look like a mermaid: hindsight leads me to believe I looked more like I was drowning. True story.

As for my other under water post? We'll sea (sorry).

en été

Dimphy Janse by Hunter & Gatti for Vogue Spain Janury 2012

The warmer weather that we've been having in Britain lately has made me more than excited for the summer to come, and more importantly, the clothes that come with it. Seeing this editorial on Fashion Gone Rogue has only built on this excitement, and has me reminiscing about the wonderful (mostly French) summer I had last year, and planning how I can make this year better.

So let's talk about what I want to be wearing. In short, all of the above. I love that with this shoot all the clothing is actually quite unremarkable (except the fringe/feather skirt in the last photo, which of course, I need), and it's the accessories that do the talking. Feather headbands, floral headbands, headwear in general, feathers, drawstring bags, beat up leather boots and belts, vintage jewelry. I want it all. This editorial definitely encompasses the kind of mix and match style that I feel fits the sporadic nature of summer so very well.

candy

Scans by me. Photographs Tim Walker for Vogue (I think).

Currently pondering whether dressing in candy colours will satiate the sweet cravings I'm having as a result of the obligatory January Detox thanks to these images I found in an ancient inspiration folder. Despite not being the greatest lover of pink, I am loving the shoes in the second scan and the bunny ears in the third.

slice of rainbow

I died over the rainbow button bit on this dress/shirt/thing. Chloe Sevigny looks divine in this whole spread (which you can check out here),but this particular shot caught my eye due to the magical slice of a  rainbow on her chest (also the heavy dose of shiny happening below the waist also helped somewhat...). This is something I'm definitely considering DIYing, as it fits in perfectly with my New Years resolution to break out of my sartorial comfort zone and wear more lots of colour and prints in 2012. That is, instead of all black everything. A strip down my front, however, seems less scary than wearing a tie-dye maxi dress or something - I'm planning on taking my new relationship with colour slowly but surely.

I'm sure the fact that I'm even considering colour will please one of my good friends a ridiculous amount (you know who you are...!)!

historical

'MASTER PIECES' Editorial scanned by me from ELLE UK Sept 2009

I think like most of the world, around Christmas I feel the need to dress up, and start to wish that my wardrobe was capable of me engaging me in a more extravagant style of dressing. This particular editorial caught my eye purely based on the fact that it takes inspiration from historical sources, and therefore reminds me of the period drama films and TV series I love so much!

In other news.... SIX DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS! I get so excited at this time of year, and for me the next week is definitely going to involve a lot of festive activities with family and friends.

by night

'Mean Streets' Editorial, Vogue UK March '11
Images scanned by me.
Sequins + Leather + Print + Neon = Night Time Mischief
AKA what the wardrobe of an adult version of 'Skins' would look like.

This editorial has stayed in my mind since March, though it feels like I only saw it for the first time a month ago. I guess that's a mini ode to how fast this year seems to have gone. I don't know why it's taken me so long to share, but  it feels right, right now. An ode to the dark evenings if you like. Unfortunately most evenings I'm more likely to be sporting bed socks than sequins, but not tomorrow! It's the weekend, I'm going to enjoy myself and adorn myself with something cheaper similar. As I was bored, I came up with my interpretation of the look:

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

strip

Enter one of the best Magazine covers I've seen in a long time, courtesy of Jalouse x Clémence Poésy. Double French, like a secret weapon or something.*

So basically Tumblr alerted me to this cover, shot for the November Issue of Jalouse, which I now need to get my hands on. The basic premise of the accompanying editorial is that Clémence goes from "Charlie Chaplin to vintage pin up". By hearing that I would have thought the editorial would have come across somewhat smutty (read: slutty) but it's not. Find it here.

*Bad joke I know, but something that just occurred to me; wouldn't Clémence Poésy make an amazing Bond girl???

notion: dark and light

Two separate editorials taken from The Fashion Issue of Notion Magazine. I love how in two seemingly opposite editorials I would easily wear every single piece. I guess my style is slightly random in that respect!

Especially loving the red lips on the right and the hats used in each spread. I think my next hat adventure is definitely going to revolve around the furry hat on the left or the batman/catwoman/-esque one on the right. But which? Decisions, decisions.

EDIT: Forgot to say all images scanned by me etc. from Notion Magazine.

a ramble on denim shirts

So, as pretty much everyone is aware, after a long period of being forgotten in  the 90's, the denim shirt made a pretty fierce comeback a while ago: so much so that I think that around 90% of the world's population (probably) has one hanging/folded in their wardrobe (I have 2). And why not? I mean, it goes with pretty much everything, when worn in they are extremely comfortable and now, it is considered somewhat fashionable.

I definitely counted myself as a denim shirt lover, despite a slight aversion to jeans. In my second year at University, I think my uniform of black opaques, black body-con dress and over-sized denim shirt became - for want of a better word - slightly infamous. I became somewhat obsessed with snubbing brands like Topshop (who were selling denim shirts for around £30; I dread to think how much designers sold them for), by finding denim shirts in charity shops: I bought both of mine for £3: a Levi's and a Wrangler which would have cost at least 10X the price when new.

But lately, I don't know... I guess I haven't felt the love. I feel like the denim shirt has been so overdone that I pass over any look styled with a denim shirt. It's almost too accessible. Too generic. Before long I had  retired mine to the the back of the wardrobe without even realising.

But then... the above picture... quite simple styling but wow, an outfit styled with a denim shirt was my favourite out of an editorial! This never happens anymore, especially as some parts of the look are simple, and in my mind, quite commonly paired with a denim shirt (the black trousers, brown belt...). I tend to prefer a bit of the unexpected in an editorial.
There is just something, however, that feels remarkably fresh... I think it makes a big difference that the shirt isn't the focal point... The outfit doesn't say 'wearing a denim shirt = fashionable'. I guess it just has the kind of understated cool that I am constantly trying to achieve!

It also helps that the trousers are fringed and I have serious hair envy for the model! But seriously... denim shirts? Am I about to dig mine out again? I don't know. There also seems to be a slight return of denim on the catwalk for S/S 12, but nothing has really grabbed me. Maybe if I owned that Poncho/Blanket.

Shot taken from French Grazia and (as ever) scanned by me. I picked up loads of French magazines on my trip so expect more from them! Also, thanks to those who wished me well: I had a great time! And also thanks for all the sweet comments on my previous posts, you're all so nice!

the single girl vs. the [fashion] world

I think the fashion world is trying to tell me something.

It all started when I bought 'The Pick Me Up' Issue of i-D Magazine, which, in essence, contained a glossary of pick up lines that may have been better off left in the nineties. Although the pictures/clothes make up for it in abundance.

See evidence:

At the time I thought nothing of it. I'm happily single, so i-D magazine thrusting pick-up lines in my face didn't really faze me despite the rather cute guy in the third picture/throughout the entire issue. Until last night, when during a visit to a Chinese restaurant I received a fortune cookie which read:

'A new romance is on the horizon'

Or something to that effect.
Then, as it was a Wednesday (look at me knowing my days of the week...), I checked YouTube to see whether Jenna Marbles had a new Vlog, and she did, on (you guessed it)... PICK UP LINES.
Evidence:

So, that's it, the world apparently wants me to quit my single semi-repelling ways (I'm not quite a Man Repeller, love Leandra though!), and settle up with some a random man that I'm meant to find by using one of the following:

'Do you like raisins? Well, how about a date then?'
' Life without you is like a broken pencil... Pointless.'
Or my personal favourite:
'Let's make like fabric conditioner and snuggle'

Sorry, but unless it's Justin Bartha/Ed Westwick/Patrick Dempsey/Alexander Skarsgard, I'm just not interested, no matter how appealing the thought of having someone on call to take outfit pictures is. Just kidding, if my outfits were actually that interesting I'd buy a tripod.

Images and pick up lines stolen and scanned from i-D Magazine.
