high and mighty

Helmut Newton for Vogue US 1995, images via the fashion spot

A little bit of editorial content for you today, thanks to the documentary I watched last night about the Editors of Vogue. Definitely worth a pop if you get a chance.

Onto the editorial itself; shot by Helmut Newton and featuring a lot of scary looking heels metal instruments, it sets out to highlight the potential dangers of heels.* A little severe and a little more controversial than that, it's pretty hard hitting and definitely an editorial after my own heart. I don't wear heels, and this editorial firmly cements my faith in the flat. Luckily for me, I've no long-standing injuries other than two weak ankles due to twists and sprains.

What this article makes apparent, however, is not that we need to take good care of our ankles and walk carefully, but that you can't underestimate Vogue for making an editorial about so much more than the shoes.

*Well, I suppose only sky scraper heels, as I'm pretty sure a kitten heel is relatively harmless. Then again I fall over in flat shoes so I'm not really one to talk.

Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne, Vogue UK March 2012

I'm probably a little behind in posting this but 1. I don't really care and 2. OHMIGODLOOKATCARADELEVINGNE.
I actually don't buy Vogue all that often (slap on the wrist for me), or follow models particularly closely, but this cover is pretty... Fresh? Which I guess is appropriate given that we're meant to be moving into the Spring season despite the snow that still seems to want to bombard us with it's presence.

In short; I'm pretty sure I just paid £3.99 for a picture of Cara Delevingne's face. Nice one, Vogue.

white - the encore

Vogue Italia, April 2010

When I get an idea of what I want to wear in my head - in this specific case, the colour white* - I more often than not make a collage of items (see previous post), and then visualise what it would look like in an editorial/if I were Anna Dello Russo.

So, there's the short but sweet logic behind today's post: a blast from the past editorial courtesy of Vogue Italia circa 2010. Isn't it SO good? I have to admit while searching for this I came over far more editorials of the Sports-Luxe variety, and to find this in a sea of stream-lined white minimalism was a dream come true for a fashion fantasist such as myself. When it comes to editorials I like a little bang for my buck if you know what I mean?

*Yes I'm aware that white may or may not techinically be a colour.

Lake Bell

Images from vogue.com

Whilst I'm not usually one to bang on about interiors (unlike someone I know...), I love seeing the homes of people I find sartorially inspiring, partially for inspiration, but mostly because I'm just plain nosy.

Anyway, I digress, I stumbled upon this article on Lake Bell's apartment and squeeled with delight. Along with Solange Knowles, Lake is one of my #1 girl crushes, and definitely doesn't get enough recognition for her style. Either that or she's just one of those naturally mysterious and elusive people that I'm endlessly trying to emulate. I'm going to stop now before this turns into a love letter.

Anyway, had to share because she looks super cool and I want to look super cool and yeah, Lake, I love you (back to love letter territory - sorry!). Also, I love all the 'Lake' references in her home - she's obviously hilarious.

You can see the rest of the article here.

P.s. Don't forget that tomorrow is the last day that you can vote for Polway in the Cosmopolitan Blog Awards 2012! Vote here.

Brittania

Elle Brazil (April 2012) x Georgia Jagger

Despite seeming a little too similar to a certain editorial featuring Miss Moss, I kinda fell in love with this when I found it randomly on the internet due to the poofy skirts, gold glitter boots  and costume-like nature of the styling. If I could wear a crown on my head everyday, I would.

Also somewhat in love with the dark purple lip colour. Beaut.

It also feels very fitting with the Queen's jubilee being this year and everything - I guess this is about as patriotic as I get!

metallic Monday

Spending my Monday compiling blog post titles that use alliteration relaxing with the above items:
  • Vogue Paris (Mars 2012) with a metallic title and black and white portrait of Natalia. I think that sometimes the more simple covers are the strongest, non?
  • My new favourite cuffs, from H&M. Possibly a slightly less 'everyday' colour of metal, rosegold is actually my favourite. Needless to say I'm lusting after the rose gold version of the 'everyone has it' infamous Michael Kors watch.
  • Another recent H&M acquisition in the shape of the silver clutch. I've been looking for the perfect envelope clutch for the longest time, and I finally found one that fits my style perfectly, in that it's minimal yet slightly garish at the same time.
Not pictured (also, not metallic):
  • Copious amounts of green tea with jasmine.
  • A Cadbury's Creme Egg
  • French dictionary (for translating).
  • Heroes Season One boxset. I loved this back in the day, so I'm revisiting!
Hope you're all enjoying your Mondays!

en été

Dimphy Janse by Hunter & Gatti for Vogue Spain Janury 2012

The warmer weather that we've been having in Britain lately has made me more than excited for the summer to come, and more importantly, the clothes that come with it. Seeing this editorial on Fashion Gone Rogue has only built on this excitement, and has me reminiscing about the wonderful (mostly French) summer I had last year, and planning how I can make this year better.

So let's talk about what I want to be wearing. In short, all of the above. I love that with this shoot all the clothing is actually quite unremarkable (except the fringe/feather skirt in the last photo, which of course, I need), and it's the accessories that do the talking. Feather headbands, floral headbands, headwear in general, feathers, drawstring bags, beat up leather boots and belts, vintage jewelry. I want it all. This editorial definitely encompasses the kind of mix and match style that I feel fits the sporadic nature of summer so very well.

candy

Scans by me. Photographs Tim Walker for Vogue (I think).

Currently pondering whether dressing in candy colours will satiate the sweet cravings I'm having as a result of the obligatory January Detox thanks to these images I found in an ancient inspiration folder. Despite not being the greatest lover of pink, I am loving the shoes in the second scan and the bunny ears in the third.

Helena BC x Marc Jacobs

Helena Bonham Carter for Marc Jacobs
Scanned by me from Paris Vogue, Septembre '11

Helena Bonham Carter is a little like Vivienne Westwood for me, AKA she's got that no-frills/imma-dress-how-I-want attitude that exudes confidence and results in a strong level of personal style that I admire in any person. Even if it isn't how I'd personally dress.

So whilst I'm not entirely sure why this isn't a Vivienne Westwood advertisement (especially since she basically wears Vivienne exclusively to red carpet events), it definitely put a smile on my face on this miserable Thursday afternoon. And not a fake paper one like in the picture.

by night

'Mean Streets' Editorial, Vogue UK March '11
Images scanned by me.
Sequins + Leather + Print + Neon = Night Time Mischief
AKA what the wardrobe of an adult version of 'Skins' would look like.

This editorial has stayed in my mind since March, though it feels like I only saw it for the first time a month ago. I guess that's a mini ode to how fast this year seems to have gone. I don't know why it's taken me so long to share, but  it feels right, right now. An ode to the dark evenings if you like. Unfortunately most evenings I'm more likely to be sporting bed socks than sequins, but not tomorrow! It's the weekend, I'm going to enjoy myself and adorn myself with something cheaper similar. As I was bored, I came up with my interpretation of the look:

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

a ramble on tattoos

Getting a tattoo is something that I've been considering since I was eighteen. Unlike my urge for getting one, however, ideas of what I would actually ink myself with are sporadic at best. And not in a 'maybe I should get more than one' kind of way. I mean, if I had actually gone and gotten a sparrow on my ankle at eighteen like I had wanted,  I would probably be saving up for laser surgery right now!

Despite my reluctance to take the plunge, I can't deny that it makes me happy knowing that tattoos are much less taboo now than they were even a few years ago. Not so long ago models with tattoos would struggle to be hired, now Freja Beha, with her twelve tattoos, is one of the fashion world's preferred models. Her tattoos add to her and make her stand out; without them, would she be as successful?

Around the time I realised a tattoo was something I wanted (admittedly whilst travelling... cliché much?) UK Vogue actually printed an article on the subject, which started an argument in my mind that has lasted the three years since I read it. I have managed to find a write up of due to some nifty 'googling'. Find it here.*

Needless to say I'm on the fence. I think some tattoos are beautiful, some... well... aren't. I think they're a great and unique way to showcase individuality (rather like a permanent way of 'dressing for your personality'... a permanent accessory if you like), but as it states in the Vogue article... there's something refreshing about virgin skin. But then scars are beautiful and show where a person has been and displays a personality quirk that may have otherwise remained hidden. But then even without 'meaning' they can look sooooooo cute like in the above picture, which I saw and promptly thought 'who wouldn't want a giraffe tattoo... I'm gonna pencil me an appointment right now!'

Do you see my problem here? I'm too indecisive.

After moving on from Sparrows to wanting some writing, I'm currently wanting something Hummingbird related on my thigh. This has been my number one tattoo area since seeing Zana's (of Garbage Dress) tattoo (here). I think placement is everything. Would a giraffe tattoo look anywhere near as good if it was on an arm? No, it wouldn't.

So in rapid conclusion, I guess it's something I'll do eventually... I'm always asking people about their tattoos (do you guys have any?) and discussing potential designs/placements/meanings. Until then I guess I'll just enjoy my virgin skin.

*I actually still have the article... tried to find the original article online but couldn't. If anyone's really bothered I could probably scan it!

hair issues

Sooooooo... Hair. Somehow, it's always an issue for me. Throughout my teens I dyed it a multitude of shades (though never anything bright... I tended to stick to the blonde>brunette spectrum) and once that made it too dead to dye, I switched up my hairstyles. This was of course until I wanted really long wavy hair like the Olsens... So that pretty much leads us to this moment...

I have been growing my hair for 2 years. 2 years, people. I was plodding along with my waves blowing in the breeze, whipping it around to Willow Smith etc... then I see the above editorial. And suddenly, I want it short again. FML. And now, short hair is everywhere! Alexa Chung... Marina from Marina and the Diamonds (see below)... It's stalking me...
So should I do it? Do I take the plunge? Or will I regret it?

Also, how nice is this editorial? Stolen and scanned (by me) from Aug '11 Vogue UK.

That pretty much sums up my life dilemmas at the moment... So as it's a Tuesday, here's a tune! Love this new song from Marina... and her new hair, of course.

dans la rue

'Il n'y a pas de mode si elle ne descend pas dans la rue.'

I'm a true believer that the best ad campaigns are the most simple. Chanel have definitely got it right with this one (and I'm not even a big lover of Chanel... I know... shoot me.): I mean, you can't really go wrong with an over-sized shirt, bed hair and Freja can you? Although, it has to be said that for a French fashion house, their stance this season feels a little messier, more rugged... and perhaps a little British? In a good way of course.

Picture taken from Chanel A/W 11 in UK Vogue Aug '11. Scan by me.
